Frequently Asked Questions About Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

The discovery that the body is able to heal itself from certain ailments is one of the greatest medical discoveries of recent years. This is most often done these days using a regenerative medicine known as platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP therapy), which is designed to promote the healing of tissue within the body by amplifying your natural growth factors.

The therapy is carried out by extracting one or more tubes of blood from the patient, before running the sample through a centrifuge in order to isolate and concentrate the platelets within. Once activated, the platelets can be injected directly into the affected area of body tissue, releasing growth factors that promote the production of reparative and restorative cells.

What Types of Conditions Can Be Treated Using Platelet-Rich Plasma?

The therapy can be used to accelerate the healing and repairing of injuries to tendons, muscles, ligaments and joints, as well as evidence suggesting that PRP has a positive impact on patients with musculoskeletal problems, such as osteoarthritis and the long-term effects on fractures. This makes PRP particularly popular amongst athletes or those in a labour-intensive line of work.

What Is a Platelet-Rich Plasma Facial?

Platelet-rich plasma’s applications don’t stop at simply being medical! PRP has also been used increasingly in a high-end beauty treatment, the platelet-rich plasma facial (also known as a ‘vampire facial’).

These facials begin in very much the same way that traditional PRP does - with the drawing of blood from the patient and the concentration of platelets. However, rather than then being injected into the patient, the PRP is rubbed directly onto their face and is micro-needled into the skin. There are thought to be many benefits to this kind of facial, as the plasma has rejuvenating qualities when absorbed into the skin, including the reducing of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as the stimulation of collagen growth. Because it have many natural growth factor from your own body that can stimulate and rejuvenate the area you injected.

Many have come to love the results of the procedure, with the best results achieved by having a PRP facial every three to six months.

Who Makes a Good Candidate for Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy?

As we’ve mentioned previously, the most common patients in the practice of platelet-rich plasma therapy are athletes and those with labour-intensive jobs, as the ailments that can currently be healed using PRPT are all fairly common physical injuries, such as:

  • Facial rejuvenation (Most Popular)

  • Muscle injuries

  • Rotator cuff tears

  • Achilles tendonitis

  • Tennis elbow

  • Arthritis

  • Hair loss

Of course, if you’ve gained any of the above injuries through other means, you may still opt for PRP therapy as your chosen treatment. PRP therapy is less invasive than surgery and has a much shorter recovery time, so it can be a truly helpful option to have if you do find yourself in this position.

However, not everyone is eligible. Those with cancer that hasn’t yet been in remission for five years, sufferers of blood-borne diseases (Hepatitis, HIV, etc.), those suffering from Cerebral Palsy or Parkinson’s Disease, those taking blood thinners and those who are currently dealing with any kind of infection will most likely be unable to undergo PRPT.

Are Platelet-Rich Plasma Injections Painful?

Platelet-rich therapy can typically cause some discomfort, but only a little more than any other injection causes. In an effort to reduce this discomfort, the doctor administering the treatment will generally use some sort of topical numbing solution or even administer a local anaesthetic to the patient first and it take around 30-45 minutes before doing the treatment.

Does Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy Have Any Side Effects?

There are potential side-effects involved with any treatment that requires a substance to be injected into the skin - even if that substance has come from the patient’s own body. However, the risk of long-term side-effects is fairly low, with the only noticeable effects generally being a little discomfort at the injection site, high risk of bruising and swelling.

Other potential side-effects it vary rare to have this, include tissue damage, infection and nerve injuries. All patients who feel any reluctance towards the procedure because of the potential side-effects should ensure that they speak to their doctor about their concerns first.
